Brothers Long Before They Were the Exchange Brothers

David and Tom Moore have been building businesses together since 1991. But being brothers? That goes back a little further, and there’s a broken collarbone to prove it.

“I was so happy he was born,” David recalls. “I was bouncing around on a bed and fell off. Broke my collarbone. Mom and Dad didn’t even know it.”

Tom can’t help but laugh. “Had that effect on you, huh?”

Some things don’t change. You build a business, help people through complicated transactions, raise families, and your brother is still right there, ready to give you a hard time.

For David and Tom Moore, co-founders of Equity Advantage, The 1031 Exchange Bros, that’s part of the fun.

Building a Business Around Helping People

Both brothers came to the Pacific Northwest through their own real estate investments. David’s real estate investments brought him to Oregon in 1990, where he met his wife, Sheila. After Tom graduated from UC San Diego, he too followed investment opportunities north.

In 1991, they founded Equity Advantage with the goal of giving people the quality service they needed to work through a 1031 Exchange.

Real estate transactions can get complicated, whether you’re putting a deal together or trying to get one back on track. The brothers built their reputation helping investors work through those challenges, understand their options, and figure out how to move forward.

Helping people extends beyond the business, too. Equity Advantage currently sponsors the Cancer Ski Out, Kruse Way Rotary, and the Lake Oswego School Foundation. David has also served as a Rotary president and on the board of the Oregon Cancer Ski Out, along with supporting scholarships and programs that help young people get their start.

Finding More Ways to Help

Over the years, clients kept asking about investing retirement money in real estate. They wanted help with Self-Directed IRAs, and the brothers saw an opportunity to provide it.

By 2008, financing was getting tighter and investors were watching their retirement savings shrink. The need was there. David and Tom founded IRA Advantage to help clients pursue real estate and other alternative investments through self-directed retirement accounts.

Their approach for IRA Advantage was essentially the same as for Equity Advantage: listen to what people need, understand the options, and help them take the next step. And that approach has continued to serve their business well, as they continue to serve their clients and help them do more with their retirement funds.

Family, Community, and a Little Teasing

There’s plenty to keep both brothers busy outside work, too. They share interests in tennis, snow skiing, and water sports, along with the family commitments that fill up a calendar quickly.

Through all of it, they’ve had each other. Starting a company together in 1991 became years of solving problems, building client relationships, and eventually starting a second business.

And there’s still time to remind the younger brother where it all began.

“Look, he’s still stuck with me,” David reminds us.

Though a broken collarbone was a bit of a rough start, their lifelong partnership has turned into two thriving businesses that continue to serve retirees and investors throughout Oregon and beyond.
